In this section of Somali Introduction and Greetings, we will have the general greeting.  The greeting that are used most of the time in the Somali language is Assalamu Alaeikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. (Assalaamu Alaeikun for Short) This is the universal Islamic greeting. It is not Somali but it is Arabic. Also in the Somali greeting, people usually ask about how the family is doing. Hi means (haye). (Haye) also means OK.

Do you Speak Somali? Somali maku hadashaa?
What do you do for living? Maxaad ka shaqaysaa?
Do you work? Ma shaqaysaa?
Where do you work? Xagee ka shaqaysaa?
Yes I work five days a week Haa waxaan shaqeeyaa shan maalmood asbuucii
Do you go to school? Ma aaddaa iskool?
No, I don’t go to school now Maya, iskool ma aado hadda.
I don’t understand Ma fahmin.
Do you understand? Ma fahamtay.
Yes, I understand Haa, waa fahmay.

The above is the Islamic Greeting that everyone use.

In the Somali language,  you might some times hear:

How are you brother/sister? See tahay aboowe/abaayo?

How are you uncle/aunt? See tahay adeer/eedo?  (for elderly people)

This is just as to show some respect.
